Cipher and Glitter Paws

The pup’s nails clicked lightly against the smooth stone floor as he shifted, settling more firmly into Cipher’s lap. The sound was ordinary, domestic — and yet it made Luma’s stomach twist.

Already a pair.

She sat cross-legged on the opposite bench, palms resting against her knees. A faint glow threatened to form at her fingertips, but she didn’t bother holding it. What was the point?

This was supposed to be her plan. Get him a dog, let him soften, then he’d see they were ready for a child. Instead, Cipher had folded the pup into his soul before she could even name it. She could feel the quiet sync between them — breath to breath, pulse to pulse — a bond forming without her.

Glitter Paws lifted his head, tilting it in that way that made him look far too clever. The aura-lights overhead caught in his fur, scattering tiny sparks across his dark eyes.

A boy. Of course Cipher had chosen a boy. He hadn’t even waited for her.

And if it’s a child? What if it’s a boy? Cipher would latch onto it just as tightly. And if it’s a girl? Worse. He’d see her through this dog’s sweetness, the same bright-eyed loyalty. Where would that leave her?

She clenched her hands. The glow died.

From the wall-screen, the Dreamer’s voice spilled faintly into the room — Nysa Ardentis, eyes blazing even in exhaustion, warning Fireworks Reach that without endless work, their auroras would dim. Luma rolled her eyes. Nysa burned too loudly, too visibly. Yet envy curled sharp in her gut: at least the Dreamers were seen.

Cipher looked up from the pup, brow arched. “Don’t start,” he said, tone dry but edged.

She rolled her eyes in return — her only weapon — and he smirked like it was settled.

And Glitter Paws, traitor that he was, nestled deeper against him.
