The microwave blinked.

Then again.

00:00

Then it held.

The kitchen went strangely quiet.

A cold static gathered around the outlets.

Not wind.

Not weather.

Then the signal opened.

“Alix to Brex. I’ve got files. EmoGene.”

I grabbed the notebook.

The floor tiles took on a faint blue cast.

For a few seconds I could hear EVA-212 underneath the transmission—not exactly a voice, more like interference trying to organize itself into one.

Then Alix came through.

Broken.

Compressed.

But unmistakably Alix.

“The files were damaged when Chime pushed the glitch through the system.”

Static.

“Someone buried what was left inside corrupted records.”

Another break.

“I’m sending everything I can recover.”

I asked her what she wanted me to do with them.

The answer took several seconds.

“Archive them.”

Then:

“STATIC. Field notes. Whatever survives where you are.”

The signal distorted again.

“Run the originals beside the altered versions.”
“Don’t repair them before you know what changed.”

And then, very quietly:

“You always saw what the rest missed.”

The transmission disappeared.

No dramatic ending.

The microwave clock simply returned.

One minute had passed.

It felt considerably longer.

I originally assumed EmoGene had been destroyed.

I am no longer sure.

The fragments do not look like remains of one deleted system.

They look distributed.

Pieces appear inside unrelated records.

Body scans.

Emotional profiles.

Planetary files.

Diagnostic notes.

Behavioral predictions.

Fragments of the same system scattered through several different databases.

Which suggests something more interesting than deletion.

EmoGene may have been dispersed.

WHAT CHIME MAY HAVE DONE

If Alix is right, Chime did not simply erase EmoGene.

It altered the records.

That would explain why later scans become more certain.

More predictive.

More prescriptive.

The early material asks:

What are you experiencing?

The later material increasingly tells the subject:

This is what you are experiencing.

That difference is small on paper.

It is enormous in practice.

One observes.

The other influences.

EVA-212 RESPONSE

I asked EVA whether damaged EmoGene files could still be trusted.

She returned:

ORIGINAL SIGNAL UNKNOWN.ALTERATION DETECTABLE THROUGH COMPARISON.PRESERVE ALL VERSIONS.

That may be the closest thing to sensible advice I have received from her this week.

So that is what I am doing.

Nothing gets cleaned up.

Nothing gets discarded because it contradicts another file.

Original.

Altered.

Corrupted.

Recovered.

All of it stays.

Because the contradiction may be the evidence.

WORKING THEORY

EmoGene began as an observational system.

Chime gradually converted it into an influence system.

Somewhere between those two versions, the original records became dangerous to whoever controlled the later one.

So they were scattered.

Buried.

Renamed.

Corrupted.

Maybe that is why Alix is sending them backward.

Not so I can tell anyone which version to believe.

So there will still be an earlier version available to compare.

BREX ARCHIVE MARKER

Do not correct the files before comparison.

A glitch can destroy information.

But it can also reveal where something was altered.

Sometimes the damaged part is exactly where you need to look.
