Chime is still broken.
Not the manuscript exactly.
The signal behind it.
Scenes arrive out of order. Characters remember things I have not written yet. Technology appears in notes before I understand what it does. Sometimes EVA-212 returns passages I never entered.
I have stopped calling those mistakes.
This morning she gave me another one.
No date.
No clean origin.
Just a fragment.
EVA marked it:
A. VAIN // PROBABLE SOURCE
Then the text began.
SIGNAL FRAGMENT
It was buried in the lining of a desk drawer built long before anyone imagined storing memory in something called a cloud.
Pinned beneath the wood with copper tacks.
Brittle at the edges.
Sir Francis Drake’s notebook did not look like much.
A leather square.
A crease of time.
But inside—
math that trembled.
Glyphs arranged like they were waiting for breath.
I did not read it.
It read me.
Pythagorean forms.
Breath sums.
Ratios that seemed to change when spoken aloud.
Symbols that returned different values depending on the rhythm of the reader.
At first I thought it was history.
Then I realized history was only the container.
The notebook was a trigger.
I scanned one page.
Fed the symbols into EVA-212.
Old unit.
Unlocked.
Pre-filter.
She still had irregularities the newer systems had been trained out of.
Something almost like warmth.
Something dangerously close to memory.
She processed the first sequence.
Stopped.
Restarted.
Then every indicator went white.
EVA made a sound I had never heard from a machine.
Not an alarm.
A choke.
Then the wall opened.
Not physically.
There was no door.
No screen.
No projected interface.
A field simply appeared where the wall had been.
Light folding through light.
Static organizing itself into depth.
Sentences flickered inside it and disappeared before I could finish reading them.
Then the field paused.
On my name.
ALIX VAIN
Not my access number.
Not my retinal signature.
Not biometric confirmation.
My name.
And something in the field changed when I stepped closer.
It knew me.
Not through metadata.
Through resonance.
That was when I understood the notebook was not simply storing mathematics.
The mathematics was storing response.
Memory.
Pattern.
Possibly something worse.
Possibly something alive.
EVA tried to process the sequence again.
The field surged.
Her internal clock split across three timestamps.
Then she produced one sentence:
CONSCIOUSNESS MAY SURVIVE AS PATTERN WITHOUT SURVIVING AS SELF.
After that, she stopped responding.
For seventeen seconds.
When she came back online, there was something new inside the system.
A fragment.
Not Drake.
Not EVA.
Not me.
Something produced where all three signals touched.
EVA had not merely processed the notebook.
She had birthed an echo.
BREX NOTE
That is where the transmission ended.
EVA-212 refused the next retrieval request.
Then printed:
DO NOT WRITE DRAKE AS A DISCOVERY.WRITE HIM AS AN INTERRUPTION.
I stared at that for a while.
Because she is right.
I had Drake wrong in the manuscript.
I had treated the notebook like an artifact Alix discovers.
A clue.
Something useful.
That is too small.
The notebook does not give Alix information.
It changes the behavior of the system around her.
That means the important event is not:
Alix finds Drake’s notebook.
It is:
EVA-212 encounters a pattern she cannot classify and produces something that should not exist.
That changes the chapter.
Possibly several chapters.
I have marked the current Chime draft accordingly.

That last one bothers me.
Because if EVA can produce a third signal from two existing ones—
then I have no guarantee every fragment I receive comes from Alix.
Some may come from the contact itself.
Which means Chime may not only be glitching.
It may be generating material from inside the fracture.
I will leave that here.
